Alabama Folklore:
Songs, Superstitions, and Survival 

Folklore is both an archive and an allegory. It preserves the textures and testaments of everyday living while offering its keepers both endurance and transcendence. At once both a vessel of memory and a method of survival, it has continuously defined and redefined the Black experience across the state of Alabama.

An Alabama Story:
From the Hill

​Experience the powerful, unvarnished history of Alabama through the voices who lived it.  An Alabama Story bridges the gap of African American life in Alabama, centering oral histories to foster deep understanding and insight into what makes Black history Alabama history.

The Velma Walker Art Collection
 
Velma Ann Walker, a proud alumnus of Alabama A&M University, bequeathed a diverse art collection to the State Black Archives to assist in further enhancing its mission. This expansive and prized collection includes works by such renown African American artists as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and Benny Andrews, to name a few.  The collection can currently be viewed at the State Black Archives.
